LILIANE LIJN
American-born artist Liliane Lijn started her career in Paris in the second half of the twentieth century. Her ‘Poem Machines’ materialized the process of surrealist writing, her experiments with rotation prefigured what would be called ‘Kinetic Art’ and her ‘Koan’ series remains a highly important body of work, reflecting and representing the feminine through abstract form. In Metabolic Rift a selection of her drawings display blueprints for speculative mechanical constructions. They induce a meditative state, enabling the viewer to visualize in repetitive patterns immaterial elements, such as sound, language and emptiness itself. Using energy for these purposes is a way for the artist to switch off the utilitarian aspect of technology and enable it to channelize spiritual or poetic concerns.
